The Guide is divided into two sections for ease of use. The first section is designed to help foundations who are new to RI and would like to engage their current fund managers in a discussion about the possibility of implementing an RI approach. Community Foundations of Canada and Philanthropic Foundations Canada have collaborated in sponsoring research into the status of community/mission investing on the part of Canadian foundations. This paper addresses the “community/mission investment” (C/MI) component of responsible investing – a process whereby foundations directly invest some of their assets in community, or social/environmental enterprises consistent with their mission.

There is an emerging continuum from SRI “lite” to SRI deep, as chronicled in the study, “Future of SRI”. A further evolution is that SRI firms are expected to model the kinds of practices they require of their investee companies. This model is an initial attempt to scope out this continuum, from the perspective that firms with a more robust SRI value proposition will be able to compete more effectively in a crowded SRI market. This project is funded by Ethical Funds Inc.
